Index of Polish marriages until 1899
Let's do this! Let's build the index of all marriages which were taken in Polish lands until 1899. We already have 51628 marriages, the details below.
Why is this so important?
- The marriage deeds are the easiest to be gathered (their number is much smaller than births and deaths), but are the most informative.
- On the other hand - it is the hardest to be found, because if greatgrandparents lived in the X parish but greatgrandmother came from the Y parish - their marriage was usually taken in the Y parish and not the place they lived later.
- If we find the act of birth of death of - let's say - Tomasz Chmieliński - we know little from this because there could be dozens of them. But if we find the marriage of Tomasz Chmieliński and Marianna Kowalczyk we are almost 100% sure that they are the ones in question.
Do something for your cousins - help them in finding that you are relatives
If you live in Poland, the easiest thing is to go to the closest State Archive (the list goes here) and ask for the Books of Marriages of the main parish in the city for the years 1800-1900. In the "deklaracja archiwalna" truly say that you are carrying the scientific research on the history of inhabitants of the city and you are going to publish the results.
The effect counts - gather the largest index in the smallest possible time. Therefore, the most effective is to rewrite the existing indexes (if they exist). For the area of Russian part of Poland (Królestwo Kongresowe) and Rzeczpospolita Krakowska (Wolne Miasto Kraków) it is usual that at the end of each year (of every book of marriages for the given year) there was written the index of all married people (names and surnames and the number of the act). We are writing it down. If the acts are written as table, we are rewriting in order: year, names and surnames of the married.
Area
- The present site is devoted to the area of the Russian partition (the Kingdom of Poland, earlier the Duchy of Warsaw) and the Free City of Cracow (as long as the Napoleon's Civil Code was in force here, which was during 1810-1852).
- Wielkie Księstwo Poznańskie objęte jest projektem Poznan Project.
- Grand Duchy of Posen (mostly Wielkopolska) is covered by the Poznan project.
- Pomorze (Prusy Królewskie) is the domain of Pomorskie Towarzystwo Genealogiczne
- The Austrian partition (the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria) is represented here by some data, although the civil registers were carried by other regulations and the indexes were rather not created here, so it is difficult to rewrite and publish it.

How to do this?
The MS Excel file is perfect, but equally good is the usual text file. Please write in columns as follow:
- year
- number of act (the same that is written in the book)
- groom's surname (in the form which would be used in the ID card nowadays)
- groom's first name (in the today's standard form)
- bride's surname (in the form which would be used in the ID card nowadays)
- bride's first name (in the today's standard form)
The most important is the (5) item: when somebody who doesn't know the people from given parish finds the entry "Katarzyna Wenderczanka", he has no idea whether her father had surname "Wenderka", "Wenderek", "Wenderczak" or some other. It is only the person who is working upon the given parish can know.
One more thing - pleas do nat spare your time to be supercorrect. Please assume that 10% of entries must have an error in reading the surname. Such assumption will make you work two times faster and the overall profit will be much bigger (because you will rewrite twice as many entries). When we have all surnames written, we will have time to play with making corrections.
If it is only possible, please rewrite the acts of marriage placed at the end of the book. In such case you don't need even to look into the main part of the book.
The order of columns can vary - it is only important that it is convenient for you (to make you work faster) and to be consequent. Here you have an example of the index:
